Volume loss consultation

A consultation with a registered nurse about facial contour and volume, at our Mermaid Waters clinic.

What the consultation covers

  • An assessment of your facial anatomy and proportions, and your medical history.
  • What options exist, what each involves, and what each cannot achieve.
  • Risks, side effects and realistic recovery information, in writing.
  • Whether a procedure is appropriate for you — sometimes it is not.
  • A written treatment plan including costs, before anything is booked.

Some options involve prescription medicines. Whether a prescription medicine is suitable
for you can only be determined at a consultation, after the risks, contraindications and
alternatives have been discussed. For that reason we do not describe or price those
medicines on this website.

Areas commonly discussed

  • Cheeks
  • Jawline and chin
  • Temples
  • Tear trough
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines

Who this consultation is for

People aged 18 and over who want to discuss facial contour or changes in facial volume. Attending a consultation does not
mean a procedure will be recommended. Loss of facial volume with age is a normal change, not a condition. A procedure is one option among several and may not be the right one for you.

Risks, recovery and what to expect

This is a considered decision

This is an invasive procedure and it carries risk, including a rare but serious risk of vascular occlusion. It is not suitable for everyone.

Common effects

  • Swelling and redness at the injection sites, usually settling within about 24 hours
  • Bruising, which can take 1–3 weeks to resolve
  • Tenderness

Less common and serious risks

  • Infection
  • Lumps or nodules under the skin
  • Asymmetry
  • Vascular occlusion — a rare but serious complication in which a blood vessel is blocked, which can cause skin loss or, very rarely, visual loss. This requires immediate treatment.

Recovery

Swelling in the first days makes the early appearance unreliable. The settled result generally takes about two weeks to assess.

Pain

Topical or local anaesthetic is used. Pain thresholds differ between people; some people find these procedures uncomfortable.

Outcomes and how long they last

Duration varies considerably between individuals and depends on the area treated and your own metabolism. Repeat procedures are required to sustain a result.

Individual responses and results vary. The outcome experienced by one
person does not necessarily reflect what another person will experience. Some people see
little or no change. We cannot and do not guarantee an outcome.

Book a consultation

Every procedure begins with a consultation at our Mermaid Waters clinic, where we
assess whether it is appropriate for you, explain the risks and recovery, and give
you a written treatment plan including costs. Attending a consultation does not mean
a procedure will be recommended — sometimes we advise against one, and cosmetic
procedures are not the only way to address concerns about appearance.
