Some options involve prescription medicines. Whether a prescription medicine is suitable
for you can only be determined at a consultation, after the risks, contraindications and
alternatives have been discussed. For that reason we do not describe or price those
medicines on this website.

Who this consultation is for

People aged 18 and over who want to discuss the appearance of their lips or the area around the mouth. Attending a consultation does not
mean a procedure will be recommended. Lip shape and volume vary normally between people and change with age. Some people are not suitable candidates.

Risks, recovery and what to expect

This is a considered decision

Cosmetic injection procedures in the lip are invasive and carry risk, including a rare but serious risk of vascular occlusion. They are not suitable for everyone.

Common effects

Swelling, which is often pronounced in the lip for the first 24–72 hours
Bruising, which can last up to a week
Tenderness
Temporary lumpiness

Less common and serious risks

Infection
Cold sore reactivation in people prone to them
Asymmetry
Persistent lumps or nodules
Allergic reaction
Vascular occlusion — a rare but serious complication requiring immediate treatment

Recovery

Do not book this procedure close to an event. Swelling in the lip is often significant for the first few days.

Pain

Topical or local anaesthetic is used. Pain thresholds differ between people; the lip is a sensitive area and some people find the procedure uncomfortable.

Outcomes and how long they last

Duration varies between individuals. More than one appointment is often needed, with change made gradually and reviewed in between. Repeat procedures are required to sustain a result.

Individual responses and results vary. The outcome experienced by one
person does not necessarily reflect what another person will experience. Some people see
little or no change. We cannot and do not guarantee an outcome.

Aftercare

Aftercare is an important part of the healing process and helps reduce the risk of complications.
General guidelines include:

Avoid touching the treated area or applying pressure for at least 24 hours after the procedure.
Use an ice pack or cold compress to reduce swelling and bruising.
Avoid hot and spicy foods for at least 24 hours, as they can cause discomfort and irritation.
Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 24 hours, as they can delay healing.
Clean the area gently with a clean, damp cloth.
Apply a lip balm or moisturiser to keep the area hydrated and prevent cracking.
Avoid strenuous exercise or activity for at least 24 hours after the procedure.
Follow your practitioner’s instructions for any medication or pain relief.
If you experience significant pain, swelling or bleeding, contact us immediately.

Individual aftercare instructions may vary depending on the product used, the amount used and your
practitioner’s specific advice. Always follow the instructions given to you at your appointment.

If you have severe or increasing pain, skin that is turning white, grey or dusky,
any change in vision, or spreading redness or swelling after a cosmetic injection or
thread procedure, this may be a serious complication. Contact us immediately, and
if you cannot reach us go to your nearest emergency department or call 000.
