Teeth Whitening FAQs

Who is suitable for teeth whitening treatments?

This safe and straightforward whitening solution is suitable for most adults with good oral health. Clients under 18 years of age can be treated with parental consent.

Pregnant or lactating women are advised to avoid teeth whitening. The potential impact of swallowed bleach on the foetus or baby is not yet known. We also recommend the treatment for persons over the age of 16.

Individuals with highly sensitive teeth, or those who are in need of dental work should consult their dentist before having a whitening procedure.

It is also not recommended for people with restorations such as fillings, bonding, dental crowns or porcelain veneers in their front teeth. These are not affected by bleach and therefore maintain their default colour while the surrounding teeth are whitened. This can result in teeth with mismatched shading. If the default colour of these restorations is lighter than the natural teeth, the whitening treatment can still be used.

How does it work?

Most of us start out with white teeth, thanks to their porcelain-like enamel surface which is composed of microscopic crystalline rods. Tooth enamel is designed to protect the teeth from the effects of chewing, gnashing, trauma and acid attacks caused by sugar. But over the years enamel is worn down, becoming more transparent and permitting the yellow colour of dentin – the tooth’s core material – to show through.

During routine chewing, dentin remains intact while millions of micro-cracks occur in the enamel. It is these cracks, as well as the spaces between the crystalline enamel rods, that gradually fill up with stains and debris. As a result, the teeth eventually develop a dull, lacklustre appearance.

The 6% peroxide gel used in the procedure acts to clear the stains and debris from the micro-cracks in the enamel, restoring a whiter appearance.

How many treatments will I need?

Only one, 90 minute treatment is required to result in a whitening improvement of between 2-9 shades.

Does the treatment hurt?

It’s a very gentle treatment, that causes little to no sensitivity issues, while still delivering maximum results.

How quickly will I see results?

Whitening results are achieved immediately. Side effects include minimal sensitivity. If you have calcium marks on your teeth, they may initially appear whiter than other areas, but this will even out within a few weeks.
